In Cologne, German authorities evacuated over 20,000 residents and established a 1,000-meter exclusion zone after three large World War II-era American bombs—two weighing 1,000 kg and one 500 kg—were discovered at a shipyard in the Deutz area, marking the city's largest post-war evacuation. Bomb disposal experts safely defused the devices after ensuring the area was clear, highlighting the persistent risk of historical ordnance in a city that once endured around 1.5 million bombs during the war.
